There should be quite a few copies of that promo film around as well since The Move's own fan club offered colour and b+w copies to their members at the time!

Is this the live sound version? (If it's identical to the previous one-i.e.off the single-remember,my hearing's not up to much at the moment!).

Thanks Paul. Never seen it before but a nice time capsule! I should imagine it was shown on TV at the time.

The easy way to spot the live version from studio recording, John, is that it has an ending. The recorded version fades out.

Plus they never performed it live with the woodwind arrangements nor the sound effects! That would had been a technical nightmare as Denny Laine discovered in 1967 with his Electric String Band. Wood and Lynne certainly were watching what Laine was trying to do since when they started putting ELO together, their biggest concern and headache was how they were going to make it all audible on stage.

Again,as someone who can't hear much,I thought they did a flamin' good job with it on stage.I wonder what the reception was at the jazz festival? One thinks of Dylan and the Band at the Newport Folk Festival.(Mind, you,I'm still not sure what the reception was at Newport!).

I'm under the unfortunate and sad impression that they only ever performed that song on TOTP. Can anybody confirm if this is the case? I've not heard of them performing it on any other TV shows, they didn't make a promo for it... so looks like we're never gonna see a performance of it unless someone turns up a copy of the TOTP clip.

I can't confirm or deny that. But it's likely as The Move weren't really a full-time concern any more by 1971 and I'd guess they had just about stopped touring (and were down to a three-piece). So any promotion for singles would have probably been minimal and limited to home territory. So it's either TOTP or any other UK show where they promoted it, I suppose (if there were any).

I also remember their performance of "California Man", Roy was in full "Eddy and the Falcons" gear with saxophone.

This must exist, I saw a snippet of an "end-of-totp bundle on Jimmy Saville" on the recent JSav tribute involving Roy dressed in the E&TF gear, so it *has* to be that show.

The only other UK tv show i know they appeared on was 'Lift-Off' doing Chinatown.

They did a mini-tour of Germany and some other euro tv promos in November 1971 so it's possible that they may have performed Chinatown over there aswell

Wasn't there a recent recovery of Lift-Off inserts discovered?
perhaps!

No, those inserts were (non-musical) studio material featuring Ayshea, Ollie & Fred etc. Unfortunately no music, as far as I know.

Thanks for the info about the German trip. There's a bit of an extended possibility that Chinatown was performed elsewhere then.
