Top of the Pops - Christmas 1965 Show
« Thread Started on Jun 1, 2012, 5:10pm »

Been having a gander through the BFI database again and came across this entry-

Top of the Pops '65
(Christmas Show)
I have sent an e-mail to the BFI to try and find out if this exists or it is just a listing of a missing show.

Nick(? - by the way moderators I thought people had to use proper names now), why is it that some of the tracks you list (but not all) have got the American (R) symbol after them?

Be wonderful if this did exist, but somehow I have my doubts!! ;)

The 'R' I would imagine denotes a repeat performance lifted from a regular TOTP edition broadcast that year.

Which is probably not news to anyone else here, but I thought that in the 60s totp was broadcast and wiped as a rule. You learn something every day don't you.

Would these performances have been specificaly retained for a christmas repeat or where the episodes hanging around for longer than I presumed?

It would be nice if this turned up but I am sceptical for now!

I've always been of the belief that odd performances would be retained specifically for use in a Christmas edition in case the artiste wasn't available. Certainly happened with The Bee Gees and The Rolling Stones in the existing 1967 Boxing Day special.

When one looks at this Christmas 1965 listing, theoretically about half of it exists and could be reconstructed.

The Beatles promos were I believe the newly shot Intertel clips which all exist. The Moody Blues, The Rolling Stones "Last Time" and "Cloud", Sonny and Cher, Righteous Brothers and The Seekers "Carnival" all exist - assuming the existing clips were the ones that were used in this edition. And one could also cheat with that Sandie Shaw rehearsal.

One could also cheat with clips from other sources to represent most of the other songs since contemporary footage exists for them with the major exception of Jackie Trent nor do I recall ever seeing any footage of that Walker Brothers song.

Jackie Trent is actually a personal frustration. Apart from the 1964 Big Night Out (same show as The Beatles) and the 1966 Eamonn Andrews off air recording, there seems to be no other footage of Jackie in action that I've encountered from the 60's. Is there any more footage of her from this decade by this fine singer?

Ah, thank you Phillip; so presumably over the course of the year the producers or someone in charge would have deemed a particular performance suitable for inclusion on the christmas special and had it transfered to 16mm before wiping over the show with horse racing or what have you. I am always interested to learn how these things worked.

Cliched comment alert ----------> Such a shame there isn't more 60s totp about :/

This is correct.
If they were more intelligent they (the BBC) would of transferred every episode from Ampex 2" to 16mm film before degaussing and all episodes would still exist but that's the BBC for you. :(

Records do show that whilst most shows from 1964 and 1965 were not recorded, many individual performances were.

How it worked was like this - Johnnie Stewart would "predict" which records would go up over the next couple of weeks and on the live broadcast would have those selected performances captured - on either VT or as a T/R. That isolated clip would then be eligible for re-use in case the act wasn't available again. In those days based in Manchester, this certainly proved to be a regular problem.

I remember some of Keith Badman's Record Collector pieces on vintage TOTP editions where he showed that this happened. It was not unusual for say, Herman's Hermits to be repeated two weeks after their live appearance on a 16mm t/r insert. They seemed to use whatever recording medium was available that week to capture those performances.

All the while, the complete show as broadcast was rarely ever recorded during 1964 and 1965. It wasn't until they moved to London that complete editions were recorded on a more regular basis.

I actually saw this at a ICA screening in the 1980s and have totally forgotten about it till now!
Thanks for reactivating the memory bank (and I went for the Beatles content!)

Just been looking through the BFI database and they also list the following TOTP episodes:

1/1/1964
24/9/1964
2/11/1972
30/11/1972
13/12/1973

I've emailed the BFI to ask if they actually have them in any form. Not sure if anyone else has contacted them about these (and it does seem too good to be true) but I thought I'd try.

They also list shedloads of OGWT episodes from 1971 onwards.
