Hate to say it, but it sounds utterly awful. I don't like what I'm reading about it and will use my hard earned cash for other things.

Definitely not a joke. From my experience (which dates back to the Monkees UK tour of 1989) Flying Music know how to put bums on seats. They're behind the 'Thriller Live' show that's been running in the West End for a couple of years and have hired the same Director to put it all together. If they get it right it will run and run. If they get it wrong... the plug will be pulled real fast.

The most recent songs aired will be by the Britpop bands Oasis and Blur.

I'm finding all of this utterly baffling.
The BBC4 repeats and endless permutations of TOTP2 and compilation shows must mean that they are "successful" and "popular" and the BBC keep blathering on about the TOTP "brand" (how I DETEST that word) so...
1 - why did the BBC axe the show and why don't they bring it back, maybe not on a weekly basis but monthly? After all they've got to keep adding to the archive, keep it up to date for future TOTP consumers, but oh, silly me... they don't make regular TOTP shows any more so what clips could they exploit in future from the last 6 years? 2 - Given how the BBC keep exploiting the TOTP archive then why will they NOT spend some time and money tracking down or buying up the TOTP oddments that are out there to expand their archive, keep the the shows fresh with newly discovered/recovered clips?
I'm getting very mixed contradictory messages here. On the one hand, the BBC were all too keen to axe TOTP and sweep it under the carpet, yet they keep on exploiting the archive and "brand" to the degree they've permitted this live show.
So what IS TOTP to the BBC? An archive product to keep on milking or a product to try and keep fresh and alive to appeal to younger generations as well as introducing them to the better music of years long gone?

You made several valid points there Phillip. One of the reasons the show was axed in the first place was the plethora of video music stations that sprung up on Sky. My feeling is they shouldn't even try to compete. A monthly show with acts appearing in person, in the studio should be relatively straight forward to produce and very attractive for viewers to watch.

A monthly programme, I've always thought, would be a fantastic idea to:-
1) Make a TOTP 'event' each month and something worth watching 2) Showcase the best from the current charts/best of the month/couple of 'upcoming singles' from the following month 3) Be easier to produce and accomodate 4) Keep the TOTP archives up to date with a host of new performances for future generations 5) Being monthly, would keep production costs down 6) Keep the TOTP name alive and even more of a brand - albeit then a 'current' brand rather than a defunct one!
I have suggested this to the BBC MANY times - the idea of a monthly show. I really don't think we will ever see a full weekly show back again (although I think there is still a place for this).
However, the replies I get back from the BBC, bang on about "no plans to bring it back" blah blah blah as well as quoting the fact that audience figures would not be the same as 15 or so million!!!!!!!
Now, unless you're really stupid, who on earth would think that TOTP (or any show maybe bar X Factor finals and that sort of dross) would regularly attract that sort of figure? It's a simple no brainer fact that audience's in general have decreased due to immense number of channels that are available in this day and age - plus of course the way we watch TV/timeshift etc/watch online has changed dramatically. So, to say that the show won't get "15 million" for example (as it may have done in it's 70's heyday) is a nonsensical statement!
Unless I am wrong, I don't think, certainly on terrestrial (Freeview) for example that there is anywhere on a regular weekly or even monthly basis that you can see chart acts performing in the studio? I know we have Jools Holland for some of the year, but as I say, this isn't regular all year round and doesn't tend to feature a lot of chart acts etc...
It's such a shame that the BBC axed TOTP. At first, in 2006 when it was axed, I did tend to agree with the programme's demise (gotta be honest and say I rarely watched it when the BBC put on BBC2 on a Sunday evening - not the best scheduling move, but maybe justified it's axing??) but now, as the years have passed, I think there is a strong realisation that the show is very much missed (and not just for 'nostalgic' reasons) and certainly deserves a place back on BBC1 - and not just for Christmas!
