 TOTP 2 is back
« Thread Started on May 19, 2012, 2:40am »

It hasn't been mentioned here that this show is on again so here is a link to what's coming up. There probably won't be much of any great intrest but you never know. Worth watching anyway.

Hmm, from that little list, it looks like they've decided to simply forget about anything pre-punk (with one or two exceptions), conveniently side stepping the issue of there being so much missing from the '60s and '70s eras.

I hate to complain but bang went the perfect opportunity to show The Bee Gee's 'First Of May' from the recovered 1969 show that has been back at the BBC for almost 3 years now.
Nice to see 'Pool Hall Richard' again though, Rod's finest moment for sure.

Agreed on the Bee Gees opportunity, but to be fair, "First Of May" was actually what pushed Robin Gibb to leave the group because it was one of Barry's numbers and his song "Lamplight" was relegated to the B side.

Of course, that recovered 1969 edition of TOTP came from Lulu's collection and was recorded on... yes, twin brother Maurice Gibb's video recorder.

It seems pretty pointless to me that the BBC keep pumping out the same old recordings for TOTP2. I would hazard a guess that the broadcast of TOTP2 over these next 2 weeks is simply a case of filling a gap in the schedules.....or am I being cynical!?

I honestly don't believe these are just the 'same' old recordings for the most part... there's plenty of stuff from the last couple of days I've never seen before and are partly from the 1990s and 2000s ('Phorever People' by The Shamen being a good example), so I eagerly anticipate the further 8 installments.

I must say I've thoroughly enjoyed the first few episodes of the recent TOTP2 run. Interesting clips thrown together and a bloody caption with useful information that I NEVER KNEW regarding The RAH Band. I'd recommend checking the rest of the run out.....

Yes credit where credit is due, TOTP2 is back to it's best with 'fresh' clips and some useful facts, although last nights did have 1 which didn't really fit or belong on it and lasted for '21 seconds' too long IMHO

I mentioned to the Head of Music at BBC Four when I went there that as good as it was Starman and a fair few others had been repeated umpteen times. I got some agreement on this.

The choice of clips on this series have continued to be outstanding...

Not even just the 70s stuff (those highlights being The Strawbs and Chicory Tip), but, to mention again what I've previously stated, the more recent 90s and 2000s stuff has been great to watch again. I think 'Don't Tell Me' was one of Madonna's best singles.

I must say TOTP is back to it's old self, enjoyed every edition so far, all credit to the BBC for taking on board my complaints and Ray's suggestions, who said moaning doesn't get anything done. MORE tresures from the dust please BBC.

Some stuff taking me by surprise...great to see The Monks (aka Hudson Ford) doing "Nice Legs..." ...John Ford says about that appearance -

"It sounded Punkish, I suppose. We had a lot of flack for that record. On Top of The Pops — a British TV show we appeared on many times, Terry Cassidy mimed to my vocals, and Hud hid under a monks’ robe. We were trying to hide the fact that it was Hudson Ford, as our usual stuff was more “sophisticated.” "

The Beeb really do seem to have pulled their finger out recently. Fans of Ye Olde British Rock have been well catered for with The Faces, Free, Deep Purple, Status Quo, Mott the Hoople, Nazareth, Bad Company, Black Sabbath and Robin Trower all turning up on editions of TOTP2, Guitar Heroes at the BBC and Sounds of the 70s.

I suppose from their point of view it's a cheap way of filling up the schedules with old footage, but that's fine with me!

EDIT: I wish they would get rid of the voiceovers and just segue the clips on TOTP2. Mark Radcliffe is nowhere near as grating as Steve Wright was, but the Smart Alec tone is just irritating and doesn't add anything to the show, plus he talks over the music! The info boxes might be a bit annoying but they do occasionally let you know something you weren't aware of.

What an excellent series of 'TOTP2' over the past two weeks on BBC2!

Yes, at *last* the BBC seemed to have listened and provided us with some decent clips, many rarely or not at all seen on TOTP2 before.

Even some of the those old "classics" (Human League, Don't You Want Me and Flying Pickets Only You spring to mind as examples here) featured different performances from that we are used to seeing on TOTP2, so it really has been a pleasure to watch these past couple of weeks.

....and....for someone who positively *hated* Mark Radcliffe's voice-overs in the past, I actually found myself really warming to his style and evening giggling at some of his comments!

So, well done BBC! At last! Power to the people and thank everyone who bugged the Beeb to dig a little bit deeper into their archive!!!!

Whole-heartedly agree with the above post!

There was, to my viewing knowledge at least, *hardly anthing* that had been seen over and over again from the last two weeks (not counting the 60s clips, slim pickings means it's inevitable).

From the early 70s for example, I was expecting 'Starman', 'Blockbuster', 'Brown Sugar', 'Maggie May'..... we get 'Malt and Barley Blues', 'Gasoline Alley Bred', 'Part of the Union' and, best of all, Badfinger's 'Come and Get it'!

So a big thanks to the BBC from me!
