I would tend to agree to an extent at the early wipings although by the time of the 500th edition they must have been aware of a value to keeping the archive. Yet they continued wiping anyway erasing many classic episodes. The fact that the 74 Steptoes were retained would indicate that in some areas this policy had been revised by then.

Also its their attitude even today towards the wipings, they have never gone out of their way to shore up the archive by paying to get back the various clips that still exist in foreigh archives & only 2 weeks ago a golden opportunity to make a big deal of showing a recovered episode & promoting the search for more material was totally ignored. They didnt even bother to address why the picture quality was lower than usual.

Also they dont make the most of what has been recovered as has been discussed many times before. Those 67 69 & 71 clips no matter how poor they are in terms of picture quality could have been shown on totp2 in excerpts with captions & voiceovers explaining away the poor picture.

I assume if that Floyd clip had been returned in a professional format it would have been repeated to death by now but even in its current condition it's so rare & precious you would imagine they would have shown it at least once & trumpeted its recovery along with urging any other collectors out their to return their footage but no they have chosen to lock it away with no fanfare whatsoever.

How may more Lulus Dick Emery's John Henshall's & david hamilton's are out there totally unaware of the rarity of what they hold. They are far more likely to become aware of the value of their recordings if the BBC could actually make an effort to show this stuff & promote the continued search to recover these lost performances. Then maybe we could get close to recovering that stuff which is still out there.

Here's an idea for the BBC how about a documentary on Bob Pratt. The man is a legend amongst collectors & without his foresight there would be a lot less archive to view, the BBC owe him a great debt of gratiitude . While they are doing this a season of rare & recovered top of the pops performances could be shown along with another appeal for lost footage.

I disagree, the BBC should of at least copied the masters onto film before wiping the tapes.
Simply incompetent management there are no excuses.
Why do you agree with the early wipings Mark, don't you think these episodes were worth saving?

The trouble is if we start to complain about the picture quality , and i know it's justified in many cases , the bbc are lightly to turn around and say well we are not going to show this or that clip or episode because the picture quality isn't up to scratch , which is a real shame because from a personel point of view when it comes to archive material i would much prefer to see it in less quality than not at all , providing it's watchable.

In an attempt to sum up this whole argument - with regards to the BBC wiping episodes of TOTP until 1977 why doesn't everyone just stay on the same side because hindsight is a wonderful thing! I'm sure the Beeb had their reasons at the time or didn't know any better to think about saving every week's episode so even though we don't like it or have a time machine/magic wand to return these shows surely the fun is in the chase of recovering what still exists...otherwise this website wouldn't exist! I seriously believe there is so much more out there so let's just keep searching whilst making the most of what we have right now :) :)

Couldn't agree more.

I was responding to this Alan. I dont believe that any wiping ever is justified & the very thought of all those classic performances being wiped just makes my blood boil.

Richards take on this seems to be that the BBC probably cuould justify this vandalism due to their ignorance of the importance of these shows. I would argue that by the time of the 500th when there was already little material in the archive to use they should have been aware that this was an important programme & should be preserved. Regardless of that they carried on wiping tapes for another 4 years, hindsignt is a marvellous thing but even by 73 they should have been aware that they were wiping something very important.

Maybe my attitude when I wrote this sounded slightly too relaxed so I would just like to emphasise that in no way would I want to excuse the BBC for wiping TOTP or any other show at any time. They were totally wrong and shame on them for doing that especially after the 500th but I was just saying whatever happened happened - other than being able to travel back to 1964 which I'd truly love to do we just need to team together. I now think the Beeb (and not the same BBC employees to 40 years ago) have only recently recognised their mistake since reshowing the TOTP series/John Henshall's Jean Genie and are now doing quite well to turn things round. But I absolutely agree that there is still so much more they could do so I would love to see some type of nationwide appeal set up through the media or on the BBC to speak to everyone in the UK for example who used an N1500 before 1977 and remember recording TOTP. If tapes have been kept then how much more footage is out there stored in attics?!

I think it's fantastic that BBC4 have reshowed all the existing episodes from 1/4/76 which I'm still very much enjoying watching in addition to the new Sounds Of The Seventies series but I would love to see more being shown. Why not the redisovered 12/2/76 or 4/3/69 or even as a random episode example why not 10/4/75 on the BBC in its entirity?! When has that ever been shown by them because I'm sure TOTP2 or any other show has only screened the same 4 or 5 songs from that and without some legendary links by Emperor Rosko on his only surviving show. Obviously now that TOTP is being chronologically shown it's very unlikely BBC4 will now move back in time before 1977 in the TOTP series again.

Surely some sort of nationwide appeal to viewers would be the best way forward now but with regards to the BBC's attitude or actions at the time I would never agree with that! :) :)

I'd go further and say that they knew in the '60s that some material was important (e.g. The Beatles performances, who by 1966 when they made their final appearance on TOTP, were a social as well as musical phemomenon). Popular music was just one aspect of their short-sightedness though and it encompassed plays and others areas as well.

There is definitely a clear difference of attitude between the BBC and (e.g.) the German broadcasters, who not only kept complete sets of Beat Club, Disco etc. but also kept a lot of the studio footage and unused performances. The BBC were always very cost-conscious (for good reasons with the licence fee being as it was) but you can carry that ethic too far (which they did).

...and Nazareth doing 'Bad Bad Boy' from OGWT. I've wanted to see that for about 20 years since I first saw a teasing clip on The Rock N Roll Years. Great show tonight.

...except that Bad Company weren't "Prog". More heavy blues / rock. That's an overly (and often wrongly) used term anyway.

Ok. The Bad Company I alerted the Exec Producer to in March, and by email the month earlier. I gave him a list of 200 wiped performances at LEAST. I have the original emails, so that's a definite.
