The "puzzle" over Black & White and Colour.
I spoke to Ken a few years ago, and he stated that the 'first' TOTP recordings he had on U-Matic were straight B&W, but a few tapes in they were actually colour, but *generally* played in B&W unless a process of 'baking' the U-Matic tapes to a certain temperature immediately prior to being played. This explains why footage previously only seen in B&W is on this compilation in colour.
Whoever has transferred those tapes has obviously done the process correctly... and, in the long-term, the 1973 recordings probably have enough in them to assist a 're-colourising' once that technology becomes cheaper....

Cozy Powell with Pans People - Dance With The Devil

Looks like all those 1974 performances (Elton John/Cozy Powell/Lena Zavaroni)originated from these colour recordings. I always had a feeling someone had copied them to death before deciding to share them.
What a treasure trove. I do hope we get to see this little lot...

I think this is up to individuals or a group of individuals to attempt to obtain these clips since there is money involved, rather than involve KAL at this stage.
I believe that there needs to be multiple bids to obtain each show, not £20 and that's it.

from £20 ?....... he means £200, he wants £200 per show. the only £20 stuff is 1978 onwards, and you'll be very lucky if he replies, and he messes people about.

It sounds to me like they will be making copies and pricing them depending on how many potential orders they get.

I doubt they'll be selling the masters - probably just a DVD-R with the footage you request.

I've dealt with this guy through eBay.

Genuine seller and great communications. We shared many emails over time. I bought a load of OGWT and Rock goes to College from
Him at £15 per episode. The quality was excellent as it was a recording of the original broadcast.

He offered me some lost TOTP on reel to reel but told me he was looking fr a lot of money. He didn't know how much exactly so said he would auction them on eBay. I believe he's called Jon.

I'd be willing to spend a few hundred quid of it meant getting some episodes back.

I've had contact with the guy 'Jon' for a couple of months now about this - basically from my experience he is spot on with anything post-1978 (at 20 quid a pop) - decent quality but incomplete shows.

As for the 'wiped' footage - I offered £50 for 22-6-73 at the end of February, but have since had several e-mails saying its 'not ready yet'. It has become clear since that he is relying on multiple offers from individuals to get a grand total he is happy with (in excess of £200 per show I believe) before he will part with anything. I understand the show featuring the Sweet he wanted £500 for!

Regards

Mark

If people want to purchase items from this person, that's up to them. They can communicate privately via PM if they wish (rather than turn this thread into a buyers mart).

Personally, I can't believe the mean-spirited attitude of this person, trying to make a quick (and large) buck - illegally to boot. He obviously cares little about the rarity of the material and only about profit or he'd offer to allow Kal to transfer / preserve them in optimum quality. That way, at least a limited chance for others to see and appreciate the material would be there.

The situation is a complete mess but, of course, it's the BBC that's ultimately to blame for this state of affairs for junking the programmes originally. But I wouldn't indulge the guy in any way myself; I want to see these recordings badly but won't be held to ransom. Don't give him the oxygen of publicity (to coin a well worn phrase) is my attitude, although I can perfectly sympathise with anyone who wants to attempt to purchase / view this rare material. He's just the same as any other crook, holding important recordings to ransom that he cares little about (not that he's likely to make a sale at the greedy prices he's asking)!

I personally love KAL and all it does and stands for but unless you can travel to the UK and sit in a room that's showing something you're dying to see at the same time as another room showing something you're dying to see then we'll be DEAD before we get to see any of this stuff. The kinks on Julie Felix changed my attitude to all this. A global massive band got their well over-due 'night' on the beeb and they STILL refused to show those wonderful historical performances. Which would have been a truly fitting way to pay tribute to the late great Pete Quaife as it was his last recorded performance with the original line-up. I'd pay now - full stop. I respect the stellar work that's done on here by all involved but it looks now that these clips we crave to see go through a pocket of people in the loop then they gather dust, albeit preserved, to gather MORE dust and remain unseen. :-( If people are selling at the right price then I for one am buying.....

Thomas.

I'm with Thomas on this one. The bbc were given a 60's episode from Lulu's collection & theres the famous Pink Floyd clip & other bits of a 1967 pops as well as all those 70's editions from David Hamilton & that Dick Emery episode that i'd love to see. again There were 3 totp2 60's specials a few weeks ago & still none of that footage got shown and it took an email campaign to get them to relent & show the forthcoming 1977 episode from Diddy's collection (assuming they do).

At least this way theres a chance of seeing this footage again wven if it is in 20 second clips on you tube, in regards to most of that 1973 footage i'm pretty sure if that got retuned to the BBC in its current condition it would never see the light of day again unless you were licencing it from them at god knows how much for 30 seconds to include in a documentary.

Also on the thorny subject of asking for money for these shows if this guy hadnt spent what would have been a small fortune in the 70's buying early recorders & tape & preserving this footage we would have never have the chance to see it again. Its not as if the BBC could be bothered, If I were to go to the BBC today to request a copy of that lulu episode what would they charge? Probably over £200 for a timecoded copy.

If the BBC gave a toss about making right what they did in the 70's they could have stumped up the 20k (about a months expenses for the DG or about 1 hour of Jonathon Ross's vastly inflated pay at the time I would imagine) for this collection several years ago restored it & used it in their various clip shows & TOTP2 as a thank you to the likes of KAL & Ray & everyone on here who has spent so much time tracking down footage they lost in the first place.

Two things: the seller is reading this thread (you can be pretty sure of that).
Raising the finance to do a group buy could be done via a site like kickstarter (used by artists trying to finance albums etc)

i imagine this bloke is someone who has got hold of the PVL from the old chap who was originally trying to sell it and is now trying to make some money out of it in a more realistic way than trying to sell the whole lot for £20,000
I don't approve of him selling these items as really he doesn't have the right to sell these items but i can see why he is trying to raise a considerable sum for each item before he releases it. Realistically he only has one chance he can sells anything unique from this collection as once its released you can guarantee it will be copies endlessly on the collectors circuit
