It was really great to see last nights recovered edition of TOTP. I thought the quality of the picture was very good considering it was a home recording. There were a few lines and colour drop outs in places but otherwise it was in very good nick.

I wonder, did this recording under go any kind of restoration before it was broadcast or was it just shown how it was found on the tape. Also could this recording be improved any more?

congratulations to everybody involved in recovering this recording and getting it back on TV

Just watched it. Perfectly acceptable, but I was surprised that there was no announcement beforehand about why the quality was lower than normal, and indeed how wonderful it was that this episode had been recovered at all! After all, there may be one or two viewers who are NOT members of this forum, and therefore would not have known the situation regarding this episode. It's nice to think that my email to the BBC, along with many others from people on here, may have helped tip the balance in favour of this being shown.

Just to say thanks to the BBC (if you're reading this) - and David Hamilton of course - for showing tonight's episode. We really don't mind if it's not broadcast quality... in fact got used to it after a couple of minutes, just like watching a decent VHS video!

Completely agree, perfectly acceptable quality for a vintage show. Full marks to BBC4 for listening!

I was impressed with the picture quality, it's as if it was recorded and then stored immediately.
I was expecting far more tape 'drop outs', the picture seemed to be between VHS and S-VHS standard.

Well done the BBC for broadcasting it! :)

As far as I know, Rich, the guy who transfers the tapes for Kal cleans them up as much as possible!

It would be nice now for BBC Four to screen the remaining David Hamilton totp shows, 22/01/76, 26/02/76 and 25/03/76! I don't hold out much hope on this
though!

It could have looked even better judging by this! However, I am grateful that the Beeb showed it in whatever state it was a real treat.

A beneficial side effect to me of the 31 March 1977 David Hamilton edition just displayed was that I noticed the lower quality of the broadcast compared to previous episodes and suspected it might have not been an original copy. Being curious, I checked the internet and by happy accident, came across this excellent forum/thread. Thanks to all who persuaded the BBC to air this episode. Although not the greatest of episodes, I thought the Bonnie Tyler More Than A Lover song, although not a hit was very good. Incidentally, it looked like she hits a bum note at one point and then gives a grimace. Does this mean she was singing it live?

It was a hit albeit not that big : reached #27.
She probably was singing it live : most of the acts performed at least the vocals live at that time.

Response from the gent who did the transfer for Kal (not Beeb)""Unfortunately the transmitted version didn't represent the high quality of the transfer we made from the original N1500.

Philips tapes have very intrusive head-switching at the bottom of the screen and as a matter of course when processing the recordings, it gets masked off. Someone at the BBC decided to zoom the picture up to lose the masking and (together with too high a black-level), wrecked the picture quality. Enlarging a picture unnecessarily is something that should be avoided at all costs - especially a delicate old recording like this. Would there be anyone left at the BBC who understands these things?

The original copy (apart from some drop-out and a few glitches) looks superb and I'm sure the average viewer wouldn't have noticed much difference in picture quality from a normal TOTP episode. I was hoping that's what we were going to see on BBC4.

Sadly this sort of thing might put off other broadcasters using recovered recordings. Perhaps Kal will show the unadulterated version sometime so viewers can see just how good recovered Philips N1500 can look. ""

And it was still VERY watchable!

Before this goes down the same path as previous threads, can I remind everyone of the laws against libelling people who are still alive...
