 John Henshall's Collection
« Thread Started on Dec 22, 2011, 5:59pm »

If nothing else comes from John Henshall's collection, the fact he saved 'The Jean Genie' will always be of upmost importance and will forever be remembered as an amazing find.
But the stories we hear about a hundred other tapes makes us wonder just what a treasure trove he may be holding onto.
John, I know you can't recall what are on all your tapes but, do you have any recollections about any other music shows you worked on? I say this because I notice the opening titles of an early 1970's show called 'Disco' (sometimes 'Disco2' I believe) feature the fisheye shots, are these yours?
Also, a famous performance by The Hollies singing 'The Air That I Breathe' from the Russell Harty Show also contains the fisheye shots, did you work on this show too John?
Anyway, if John Henshall's collection throws up other lost Top Of The Pops performances from the early 1970's, I wonder what everyone's five most wanted would be.

My Top Of The Pops hopes are

The Sweet - Ballroom Blitz (changed my mind)
Dave Edmunds - Born To Be With You
Kenny - Heart Of Stone
Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes
Chicory Tip - Good Grief Christina

and if he did work on the Russell Harty Show, I'd also have to hope 'My Death' by Bowie is on one of the tapes.

This is such a hard one to answer Mike but fascinating as well , i thought long and hard about this and the 5 clips i've come up with are as follows.
1.The Move - Chinatown
2.Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs - Seaside Shuffle
3.Badfinger - Day After Day
4.John Kongos - Tokoloshe Man
5.Geordie - All Because Of you

If i could choose another 5 they would be as follows
1.Sparks - Amateur Hour
2.Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes
3.Detroit Emeralds - Feel The Need In Me
4.Medicine Head - Rising Sun
5.Roxy Music - Pyjamarama

But i could easily choose hundreds more.

I'll just be happy that good quality video could be recovered.

I'm quite content to wait and see what John and Chris Perry find when they go through John's lock-up. It just might be a very good New Year!

I'm quite content as well but it's just a bit of harmless fun of course anything is better than nothing.

There were some strange shows in 1970, where you'd get multiple performances from the same artist and half the show would be songs that weren't even in the charts - over 160 lost performances from 1970 were songs that never charted or were never even singles!

Looking through the list of lost performances from early 70's TOTPs, it's hard to choose just five. So I ended up choosing one from each year. In no particular order mine would be:

PETE WINGFIELD - Eighteen With A Bullet (26-6-75)
HOT CHOCOLATE - Cheri Babe (21-11-74)
TIMMY THOMAS - Why Can't We Live Together (15-3-73)
WINGS – Mary Had A Little Lamb (25-5-72)
THE HOLLIES - Survival of the Fittest (4-3-71)

Thinking aloud, I imagine the bulk of John's TOTP collection will feature his patented effects and, as such, will probably mean they date from 72-75. We can but wait and see but potentially this is a dream come true - and that (finally!) the BBC seem to understand the publicity & draw these finds attract in these desolate times equate to 'bums on seats' with minimum outlay and not just the whims of a few dozen 'anoraks'.

I've heard of some groups who never charted being on TOTP in the early 1970s.

Humpty Bong comes to mind.

They were formed from the ex-Bee Gees backing group members & Tim Staffell, formerly of Smile, who had 1/2 of Queen in their lineup.

It sounds wonderful and I think it's tremendous.
I'm envious, though, because I'm a Dylan fan (please,no one mention Madhouse on Castle Street) and he was never on Top of the Pops.
We had our own excitement with a lock-up.U.S. papers reported a few years back that the owner of the storage facility was selling off the contents-as they're allowed to if the rent isn't paid-and the buyer found reel-t-reel studio tapes of Bob.
Much excitement, but nothing ever came of it,that I heard.
No wonder I'm envious!

Surely the holy grail of individual 70s TOTP shows would be the edition that featured Sparks "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us", Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel "Judy Teen" and Queen "Seven Seas Of Rhye".

I don't know if Lindisfarne ever played Lady Eleanor on TOTP but if they did, I'd love to see it.

Also ....

Deep Purple - Strange Kind of Woman
Family - Burlesque
Mr Bloe - Grooving with Mr Bloe

Good post, Mike.
Mine would be:

Showaddywaddy: Hey Rock And Roll (23/5/74)- performed during technicians' strike, using instead the Morecambe & Wise set

as above, but 13/6/74 performance in studio

Roxy Music: Love Is The Drug (23/10/75)

Roxy Music: Pyjamarama (15/3/73)

Showaddywaddy: Rock 'n' Roll Lady (22/8/74)

A nice fun game for Xmas! My five would be:

Dance with the Devil - Cozy Powell
Gaudete - Steeleye Span
Cat Food - King Crimson (oh how I would love to see the TOTP audience attempting to dance to this).
Standing in the Road - Blackfoot Sue
Tap Turns on the Water - CCS
