Can't help noticing the lesser quality of the BBC 4 repeats compared to the Einsfestival repeats. I purchased a batch of Einsfestival dvd's from 1970-76 and the quality (sound & Picture) seems far superior compared to the current BBC 4 repeats, i'm no tech boffin but i'm currently recording the rpts on a Panasonic recordable dvdr using the built in freeview and using HDMI connections, i recentley went into the manual set up and chose "fine comb filter" to upgrade the picture & "dynamic range compression" to improve/boost the sound but it hasn't made any difference. any ideas how it might be improved ? I agree the picture quality does seem better on the German broadcasts than the British. With some decent software you are able to lose the logo and overdub a decent CD quality stereo soundtrack over the original audio which takes about 5 minutes per performance. Not much you can do with the actual quality of the picture though.
Sample- The Strawbs >>Part of the Union (Einsfestival)

It could be the digital bandwidth used for broadcasting. I'm not in a position to compare them but it may be the BBC4 broadcasts are at a lower bit rate compared to the German Broadcasts.

I can confirm that this is definitely the case. BBC4 uses a rather low bitrate compared to German TV. I found out that the bitrate is mostly even lower during the nightly repeats than during the first airing on Thursday evening. If you record the programmes directly you'll notice that 1GB of disc space usually equals about 30 up to 37 minutes on the BBC, while it equals about just 20 mins on EinsFestival.

The whole show this week looked very grainy but the Disco Duck bit was the worst I have seen. Then again Disco Duck is the worst thing I have seen.

I just watched 'it' on youtube to remind myself. Just after a minute in I started getting a severe attack of the Heironymous Bosch. The parties responsible should be tried for war crimes at the very least.

Technically, the Ruby Flipper element of the clip, was Cherry Gillespie's last broadcasted (not danced) appearance on TOTP, the full clip being shown 23/09/76. She was not credited on the 07/10/1976 appearance.
I always think to myself that maybe she danced to Disco Duck in September, and handed in her notice....

Despite being in the digital age the picture quality on both EinsFestival & BBC4 still would not be as good as if it was broadcast and received in analogue.

You have to admit that 'Disco Duck' has a fantastic drum and bassline riff on it...!

I think it's a great track all round : have no idea why everyone hates it. The only decent disco record ever made.
