| | 60s Irish TV pop shows? « Thread Started on May 30, 2011, 2:52pm » | |
Hello all - does anybody have any knowledge of any Irish made pop music programs that were locally made by RTE in the 1960s? I never hear anything about what the broadcaster may (or may not) have produced. Is there anything out there in the hands of the TV enthusiast which derives from Ireland in the 1960s? I hear that the locals in the day were more into their C&W and folk than British beat but English bands still toured there. Thanks LD

A few points.
RTE only started in 61 and there was only ever one channel in the 60's.
Ireland was an extremely conservative (with a small c) back then and so pop music would not be as prominent as in England. Off the top of my head I can't name any pop shows from that period.
There was a Old Grey whistle Test type show in the early 70's. I imagine it was mainly rock bands touring that would be featured. e.g. Horslips. Rory Gallagher etc.
Don't forget that the bbc and itv would be viewable (for free) to large chunks of the population back then in the 60's and 70's so they could watch the shows we all enjoyed back then, albeit with a snowy picture.

There is a book about the Beatles In Ireland (author name escapes me at the moment). It's still in print as it was only published in the last 2-3 years and you should be able to find it easily enough online. It mentions some TV shows from around the time the Beatles played in Dublin & Belfast (November 1963). Some of the 'names' from the business at the time are mentioned also. If you're doing some research that would be a great place to start.
My late father-in-law was in RTE since the 1960s but I never got to ask him about the archive there. I believe both RTE and Gael Linn have a lot of material. In particular I've heard from more than one source that Gael Linn have a *lot* of pop/rock material including one unbelievable rumour about a Beatles film which I find very hard to believe. But then again... stranger material has appeared.

I doubt that there is much in the way of hidden pop gems from the 1960s in any archive. At UTV, most of the station's musical output from the period was folk or country. From my knowledge, the station only made two pop shows during the period - Pop Scene 64 and Zoom-In (1968).

Thanks for the info lads. Thanks to Ken's mention of those two shows, just did a spot of googling and found the following in the Billboard 24 Oct 1964 issue:
"Ulster TV began 'Pop Scene 64', an ambitious five nights a week presentation that features showbands twice weekly". This sounds quite promising.
Also interesting is the mention just before in the same article that "Britain's Applejacks appeared on The Showband Show".
Clearly there is the potential for some quality research work delving into Ireland's 1960s music television history...

According to Mark Lewisohn's book The Beatles were interviewed at Dublin Airport by Frank Hall for the RTE magazine show 'In Town' on November 7th 1963.

Reporter Frank Hall Takes On The Beatles
The Beatles arrive to play at Dublin's Adelphi Cinema in the year that 'She Loves You', 'Please Please Me', 'From Me to You' and 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' topped the charts and the term, 'Beatlemania' was coined by the press. Paul Russell, the presenter of Telefis Éireann's 'The Showband Show', introduces them to the RTÉ Television crew.
Frank Hall interviews the 'Fab Four' about fame, the 'Mersey Sound', the 'Beatlecut' hair-styles and George Harrison's mother- all of this while aeroplane noise and The Beatles' antics test the professionalism of the reporter!
Such was the hysteria at their show, The Beatles had to be smuggled into an 'Irish Independent' newspaper van to be brought safely from the Adelphi to their hotel.
Programme Title: RTÉ News- Beatles in Dublin 1st Broadcast: 7 November 1963 Reporter: Frank Hall Clip Duration: 4'22"
