Thanks for filling us in on the full story, John, and also for preserving the recordings! I'll be at Missing Believed Wiped myself and am looking forward to hearing you talk.

John thank you so much for all this and for that clip. I have wondered about its existance for years as i remember seeing it in 1973.Do you keep records of your archived material?

Just booked my ticket for "Section 2: Music and More" (couldn't find any way of booking the joint tickets online as each section of the event has separate booking pages so just booked the evening session in the end!)
Looking forward to seeing some of you there!

John, may I add my thanks too. I have the original audio recording that's now posted on Youtube. It cuts off at 4.18, and I recall it being about 4.30 in length. I sent it to a guy in London in 2002 and the doctored version appeared soon after in an attempt to bring the song to a conclusion. It didnt work did it!
It will be great to see the complete performance and hear the song in superb quality after years and years of listening to a poor recording of a superb version of this classic song. Thank you so much.

John - I'd like to add my sincere thanks too. For years I've dreamt someone like you was sitting on loads of old Top Of The Pops performances. Top of my wish-list has always been 'The Jean Genie'. As soon as I heard about this recovery I booked a ticket at Missing believed Wiped because I was so sure this gem just had to be included, so I can't wait to see it at the BFI this Sunday. I wish there was a way you could do a deal with the BBC to release a DVD of any/all your archive so we can all enjoy it. I really hope you don't fall out with the BBC regarding TOTP2, I haven't seen any mention of it actually, maybe it's just a rumour. But I'm sure they would honour your wishes to include it first on BBC4's "Tales of Television Centre". Thankyou and I salute you sir!

Thanks John. Really good to see you posting on here, and I can't wait to see the Bowie performance!
Mike, What's On TV magazine definitely lists it as being on TOTP2 on 21st December (I looked for myself yesterday) though ouf course this is not mentioned anywhere else.

John, what can I say...many, many thanks. As an 11 year old I sat enthralled in front of the TV at the original, stunning 1973 performance, Afterwards I did moan slightly to my parents "It's not the same as my 7" version" I do hope you can at least digitize your archive for the future generations. I can confirm the JG 1973 performance (TOTP2) is indeed listed in print in the 'Whats On' TV listings magazine.

But now TOTP2 has announced that it will be shown on BBC2 on 21 December 2011. If so, I do not know how they obtained a copy, unless it is from the DVD with BITC (Burnt In TimeCode) which Richard Marson sent to them, or from whoever made the DVDs at the BBC. We will see. Call me old fashioned, but I am a man of my word and I promised first use to Richard Marson for use, along with my story, in his programme due for transmission sometime next year on BBC4. Richard's idea was to show a clip in his amazing programme of reminiscences of people who actually worked at Television Centre and to make the full version – in original 4:3 aspect ratio, without presenters talking over it and without superimposed captions to make it look "trendy" – available on the Red button. There could be BBC internal politics at play here, I don't know, but if so all my other archive material will remain where it is.

It seems to me that the Beeb must be reading this message board. Wasn't there a thread a little while back about interviewing the likes of Bob Pratt? Hopefully this programme with give him the recognition he deserves for saving the music clips he did as well as John Henshall's interview for the programme. I hope Richard Marson gave the okay to TOTP2 to jump the gun with the Bowie clip. It'll be a shame for John to give Richard his word for first use and then for TOTP2 to steal his thunder. John, if you feel let down with the BBC deal with Kaleidoscope instead with your archive.

Great to hear from you John, good to hear the story, and most of all, brilliant that you cared enough about what you filmed (and how you filmed it), that you kept a fair amount, long, hopeless decades after the Beeb had wiped the masters.
Someone ought to make a film about it, your collection, your lenses and effects (which are familiar to all who watched 70's TV - I still marvel at that kaleidotube effect!) the BBC wiping policy, and perhaps one or two of the stars featured being re-aquainted with the performances/footage they'd thought lost for ever.
Its big news, one only has to take a look at whats left of TOTPs on Popscenes or Nostalgia Musics episode guides, to see how incredibly welcome all this is John. Hats of to you sir, and thanks!
