No, it seems to be a rehearsal.

As far as the Xmas '69 footage is concerned, as mentioned previously, it comes from Bob Pratt's collection. Yes, they're from master VT. The parts without an audience and the outro are rehearsals but the rest (including the links) must be what went out.

Thanks Laurence, I wasn't aware it came from Bob's collection....

I always though that the reason why "Autumn Almanac" by The Kinks survives, like a lot of Kinks performances for the BBC is that Bob Pratt was a fan of The Kinks.

It does seem this way, as he also saved the displayed Kinks performance of Last Of The Steam Powered Trains and Picture Book from The Julie Felix Show,he had good taste,as the Kinks are an amazing group.

Julie Felix Show-Kinks performances (Bob Pratt Anthology(as he saved so many clips, and material, thought should be fitting to give his material a classification of its own in the Anthology mentioning here ;D Thanks Bob for having the foresight in saving all of this now historical material for future generations and historians!)

In regards to the Xmas 69 TOTP footage,I had heard that this material yielded from some open reel video recordings that were recovered from a skip outside of London? And slowly but surely made its way onto the net from that source? Not sure exactly there, just reiterating what I was told in regards to this footage:

First of all, it's great that a new TOTP clip emerges but even more exciting to learn of the jukebox distribution of clip material back in the '60s. It's a potential goldmine for missing pop clips.

On an associated topic, I had heard that TOTP was regularly distributed on film to overseas bases for British servicemen serving there, along with other programmes for them to keep up with. Is there any truth to this story? If there is, it's another avenue to explore regarding locating missing editions. I've heard the tale repeated many times before and wondered if there was any validity in it.

I often wonder if the fact there were many overseas bases has led to the great plethora of kines available of shows like Shindig, Hullaballoo, Happening ete etc

I'd like to see a list of gigs that happened at the bases too with the likes of Georgie Fame etc playing there regularly.

Seems like the youtube poster has now removed the clip from Youtube . Wondering,as no doubt many are here as to whether any kind of effort is being made in regards to this material being recovered?Just curious is all there.Have always wondered about the video-jukebox prospects for BBC related pop clips, was not known about in regards, now we know.Makes you wonder what other practices in regards to the export and sale of materials were being made by the BBC?Wonder if any other UK broadcasters had similar practices then for the sale of pop clips in this fashion?Interesting indeed.Am hoping again that further progress can be made in regards to The Hollies "Bus Stop" clip.

Cheers,Lance.

Well judging by the re-use of the Walker Brothers clip, RSG! was exporting clips to at least Germany!
Cheers,Lance.

someone asked on location, it was when totp was moved to tvc from manc in early 1966, then it moved to lime grove late 66 then back to tvc late 67 or 68 onwards i think.

Well, some more interesting information and opinions to share about this Hollies clip.

First of all, I had an email from a friend of mine who is a collector and historian who trust me, knows what he is talking about. After seeing the original upload, he shared these thoughts with me to share with you...

"That film clip of Bus Stop definitely appears to NOT be from a televised version of TOTP.

First, many reasons why I think, it is on 16mm FILM, not a kinescope from tape, & NOTE all of the (semi messy) physical splices at almost every scene change? Actually, this comes across as a splice old work print!

This film clip was staged, & probably re-shot over & over with one camera to get all the different angles!

They just were able to use that sound-stage & dancers as props I would think, also, the guys are wearing clothes that look more like everyday casual wear.
"

If that isn't intriguing enough, this morning, the mod on "Elevated Observations" a Hollies forum shared this interesting mail he received about that clip which corresponds neatly with my friend's opinion above...

"For your records, this clip of the Hollies Bus Stop was shot on 16mm film 1200' of B/W Film for the Video Jukebox Company BorMar Scope, I was the editor for the BoMar Scope Corp. and edited this film Clip and many others. This film clip was shot on the same stage as the show Top Of The Pop for BoMar Scope this is not a Kinescope print like all the Top Of The Pops Shows were, this is 16mm Black And White film. There were many many groups filmed for BoMar Scope Corp. and I edited all the shows and still have all the 16mm Film OUT TAKES Colur and B/W on the shows and I'am the COPYRIGHT HOLDER!!

So tell all your friends that this IS NOT FROM TOP OF THE POPs this was a special made-up Show.

"

The plot thickens. So, we are now being led to believe this is NOT a TOTP performance... it's certainly shot in the TOTP studio, but NOT by the BBC.

So, maybe it is time to start investigating BoMar Scope Corp. It is intriguing that the BBC allowed their studio and sets to be used for filming by such a company. This now opens up the questions - are the other isolated TOTP clips from 1966 and 1967 - Manfred Mann, Jimi Hendrix and The Kinks - sourced from BoMar? What other rarities do BoMar have?

If the BBC did indeed allow a company to film on their sets, there will surely be some kind of documentation to prove it (e.g. contract, deal etc.) Has anyone heard of this company BoMar Scope before or is it another myth? The latter, I suspect. The material has already been pretty much identified as TOTP so I am very sceptical, especially as an individual claims to own the rights, have edited all the clips AND still have them plus outtakes (including some in colour)! Interesting footage such as this would also have been licenced to DVD companies before now if this was the case! Still, stranger things have happened...
