 More Disco TOTP
« Thread Started on Aug 1, 2005, 12:13pm »

I have put up a few more "lost" TOTP clips here:

http://steve-p.org/pop/missing.htm

There's a roughish copy of one of the extant performances of Queen's "Seven Seas of Rhye". Tony Christie doing "Amarillo" (different from the one the BBC has, is that right anyone?) and Neil Diamond doing "Song Sung Blue" to a bemused TOTP audience.

Note the mute Saville* link on "Amarillo"

(*actually it's his brother Percy, as TOTP fans will know)

Thanks Steve.

I'm sure the 'Disco' version of "Amarillo" is the same one the BBC have though.

Thanks Steve, Great clips !

Amarillo is especially fine, one of the rare occasions when the TOTP Orchestra were allowed into the studio. Compare the quality of this production with the more recent TOTP 'live' Amarillos, no comparison.

BTW - The Lynn Andersson clip is in stereo, I guess it must have been re-dubbed at some point ?? Although they have done a good job of it for once.

Quite probably. There was a bloke over at the Mausoleum Club who said in the BBC one that Tony C didn't have those blue glasses on. But I think he was mistaken.

(See the Peter Chadwick post - scroll down - here: http://www.the-mausoleum-club.org.uk/xmb/viewthread.php?tid=9023)

Thanks again Steve for another fine collection of clips.

The 2nd Queen file didn't want to download for some reason - was getting an error message saying it wasn't there.

Re: the Tony Christie clip - great picture quality. What's interesting about the mute Jimmy Savile link is that the song plays straight over the link. This is in contrast to the start of the 18/10/70 edition (as shown on the TOTP2 website) where the Tony Blackburn link is mute before the sound picks up and you get a small snatch of Christie "San Bernadino". I've also got the Kinks' Apeman performance from Disco (same as BBC held version) which I downloaded from the usual sources, but with a Tony Blackburn voiceover at the beginning. It just makes you wonder about what work went on the performance clips before they were originally sent to ZDF. Wonder if there is any documentation around which would reveal all?

I meant 15/10/70, before anyone jumps in!

I was trying to figure this out earlier on, I suspected that TOTP must have been recorded onto Quad with the performance audio on one track and DJ links on another, so when the BBC sent clips to Germany etc, they just dubbed off a version with the performance track....

BUT....

Steve Roberts has said that Quad only had one audio track so that idea was scuppered. So either they recorded another DJ-less audio track (on magtape or whatever) in addition to the vision or they never recorded the DJ links in the first place. ???

Anyone have any ideas ?

Snap! I couldn`t get the 2nd "Seven Seas.." performance either. The first was was so ropey i didn`t bother keeping it. Another problem is the Lynn Anderson performance. I tried to get it for curiosity value as i`ve never seen it before, but all i could get is the audio.

Yeah, sorry. Fixed now. The second one seems to be somebody's efforts to tart up the first. They've tinted it blue and replaced the sound.

You need DivX codec for that one. WMP won't download that, you need to go to: http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/

It's one of the few bits of "Disco" I've seen where the audience are anything less than indifferent to the music. There's a guy dancing in the German audience with a white jacket - I think he's over-doing it a bit! Probably trying to impress those girls next to him, but they are more interested in getting on camera!

Notice that the Queen clip(s) has all of one performance and the first few seconds of the other one tagged onto the end. I wonder if anyone has a full version of this 2nd performace that they could share with us?
