 Pink Floyd -DVD
« Thread Started on May 30, 2005, 8:32pm »

It is amazing what you pick up whilst on your way home from work.

Tonight, in the entrance to my local supermarket, a DVD stall which normally has an excess stock of 'Police Acadamy 5' had a 'Pink Floyd - Live Anthology' DVD which I had not seen before, obviously an unofficial release, it had the following, rather curious performances included -

Jugband Blues - Uk Central Office Of Information (?..!!!? - What did they need with that ??)
Set The Controls.... - All My Loving (Heavy solorized version)
Interstellar Overdrive - Romeo Goes Pop
Let There Be More Light - Tous En Scene
Flaming - Tous En Scene
It Would Be So Nice - Tous En Scene
Sysyphus - Tomorrow's World (Colour ! 1968 ?)
Cymbaline - 1970 KQED an Hour with P.F. (Color VT)
A Saucerful Of Secrets - Stamping Ground
Careful With That Axe Eugene - 1972 Superstars in Concert (possibly Japanese)
Comfortably Numb - The Wall In Concert

Being a fan of Pink Floyd I thought I knew what was surviving from their late 60's early 70's catalogue but half of these I never knew existed. Although most of the above are poor quality (Jugband Blues featuring Syd Barrett is colour but looks like an 8mm recording from a TV screen)

Do any of you know anything about where the above may have come from ?

To put it simply, European TV stations looked after their archives better than the BBC did. That list is just a part of what's available among the Pink Floyd fan community. Most of the videos seem to be from 1968/69, this seems to be when Pink Floyd made more TV appearances than all the other years put together. Another interesting thing is that recently pristine copies of some of them are turning up to replace the Nth generation copies that have been circulating for years.

The same goes for Hendrix. A vast amount of video footage exists from European TV stations, but all the BBC have is his appearance on the Lulu Show. They even used a clip in the Rock N Roll Years 1968 even though it's from 1969/

Re: Jugband Blues.
This promo video was made in November 1967 and apparently vanished in the late 60s only to be rediscovered in Manchester in 1999. Its long been available on the net as a download/stream. It is of rough quality - very scratchy and dirty and worse, the wrong soundtrack was dubbed! This features the December 1967 BBC Radio version of the song and is therefore out of synch. I re-dubbed it on my own PC, using the mono mix from "Saucerful" and if one very brief shot is moved into the "chaos" section, it then fits perfectly. I've seen this DVD about and wonder if its been dubbed with the correct version or not!

All this stuff should get an official release. It's overdue.

This footage will be from an edition of 'London Line' which was a COI 10-15 minute newsreel series sent out to the Commonwealth countries as a guide to what was happening in London and the UK. These were not intended for screening in the UK and were for purely overseas eyes. I think it was a weekly release which ran from 1964 - 1978 or thereabouts. Music acts appeared spasmodically throughout, sometimes coming in to the London Line studio othertimes, like in the case of Pink Floyd, being filmed externally/on location.
I actually believe the Pink Floyd London Line edition is listed in the database as being missing (ie - someone has probably "removed" it). Not good.

Think I started a thread about this about a year or so ago. It might still be round in the archive. Not sure.
Cheers

Worth mentioning to Pink Floyd fans here, evidence suggests the TOTP clip of 'See Emily play' (1967) was shown on 'Pop quiz' around 1982. I seem to recall also seeing 'Judy Teen' Cockney rebel, which doesn't exist as such now either. I heard 'P Q' was largely live.

Keith Badman of Record collector magazine is supposed to have recovered a copy in recent years possibly from a European broadcaster.

I went to a few Pop Quiz recordings when I worked at TV Centre. Defintely NOT 'live', just recorded in one take, as per live then TX'd a day or so later (I think)

They showed (Pop Quiz circa 1982) Bowie's 'Jean Genie' TOTP's 5.1.73 as a question clip also!

That's interesting. Are you sure it was TOTP and not (e.g. a German show or something else)? If it was TOTP then a few words in Mike Read's ear might be a good thing...

Tried to Email Mr Read to no avail.
It was definitely Jean Genie & not Starman, can someone please contact Mr Read by way of some sort of professional in regards to his collection?

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much - I remember a newspaper item from the mid to late eighties saying that Read had several videotapes stolen from his car, all of which contained 'rare appearances by most of the big groups of the sixties and seventies'. I never saw a follow-up story, so I can only assume that nothing was returned. I always remember seeing the item and thinking ''What's he doing with tapes like that in his car?''.

I reckon my eyes DIDN'T deceive me then when I saw a telerecorded clip of what looked like the See Emily Play TOTP appearance on Pop Quiz in the '80s!

All we need to do now is find someone who has a large collection of Pop Quiz on video.

I only have the one featuring Bedders from Madness (March '83 I think).
