While I was away, I timer recorded TOTP 2 and was very disappointed that (It's Like A) Sad Old Kinda Movie by Pickettywitch was cancelled. I wish the BBC would explain why performances are suddenly cancelled at the last minute. Better still, let's hope this performance will be repeated on TOTP 2 at some point but I was pleased to see Da Da Da by Trio, which I remember seeing first time around. A strange group and strange song but wonderful and memorable.

Something I don't think I've ever seen on TOTP 2 is performances shown on existing Top of the Pops shows with a chart countdown, eg the Top 20 to Young Girl by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. Probably a copyright issue but a thought that might be worth considering.

Dear Mark
Glad I could help with Pickettywitch data. Can you tell me how to get to the TOTP2 site please? I am a real novice on computers & web sites etc . it took me ages to log on to this site. Mark, did you know the old "Disc & Music Echo" pop paper used to give a line up each week of each totp show? Certainly from 1968 - 1971. I have a lot of them!
Best Regards A.S.M

Hi ASM,

Just click on this link to get to the TOTP2 site:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/totp2/

The TOTP Database is accessible from the Performances link from the left hand side margin, but there are a load of other links and things on there which I am sure will keep you occupied for ages!

I didn't know about "Disc & Music Echo" magazine and the TOTP lineups. Did they simply show the list of acts on the programmes or were they more detailed than that? E.g. lineup order as per programme, presenters/film/studio/dance etc etc?

Do you happen to have any editions from January/February 1973? I have been in touch with Laurence about a different Elton John performance of "Daniel" to the existing (at the Beeb) 25/1/73 edition which is on the "Very Best of Elton John" video/DVD supposedly sourced from an edition of ZDF's Disco. Unfortunately, there is no record of it on the BBC documentation which is immediately to hand.

I was just thinking that presuming the magazine and this feature were still going strong in 1973, there may be a record of this performance.

All the Best,

Mark

Dear Mark
Thank you so much for TOTP board info. RE DISCS they lasted till August 1975. Sadly I do'nt have Jan/Feb73 copies BUT! I do have the "Daniel" clip. It,s on DISCO Date28 April 1973. Production number 06321/01019. I Don't know if ZDF still sell to individuals.
I have given a list of every ZDF held TOTP clips on Laurences ZDF forum. DISC gave the artists and the order of performance (First act to last) but not song titles. If I get a Disc covering what you want Mark i'll give you the data ASAP.
Best Wishes ASM

I've just remembered this information, which may be helpful to you from the original Missing Episodes Forum regarding Daniel by Elton John.

I assume from Steve's comments that he's saying there's only one performance but I apologise if I'm wrong. Anyway, I thought I'd quote this old posting:

Polygram have "papered over" the ZDF cutaways using repeated material from the EJ TOTP performance IIRC. Look closely and you'll see.

Question for Laurence/Keith - Elton John on TOTP 1973
Wed Jun 18 22:36:28 2003

Hi Laurence/Keith,

I've previously posted here before about this, but since the TOTP Database has gone online, I thought I might give it another go...

I don't know if you can clear something up for me relating to Elton John's performance(s) of "Daniel" on TOTP in 1973.

The Database only lists the performance from 25/1/73 which we have seen in full recently on TOTP2. However, on the Polygram Video Release "The Very Best of Elton John" there is a different performance (Elton wears different outfits)of this song, which although credited as to coming from ZDF's Disco, is obviously TOTP - same "fruit machine" set as early 1973 editions e.g. The Sweet "Blockbuster".

What is also interesting is unlike other TOTP sourced performances, there are no cutback shots to the ZDF audience.

I don't know whether the source of this performance was the Disco edition of 28/4/73 or if Polygram have their own copy, but if you have further information, that would be most welcome.

Thanks for all your postings - they are most informative.

Regards,

Mark

Hi folks
Regarding Music paper `DISC` listing TOTP. I've just had a large batch of early 70's ones. Sadly they discontinued this fine service in February 1972. A great pity. ASM

No, there are two performances. One at the Beeb and one on Disco. They are very similar and IIRR use the same camera script. I think Elton has a blue furry jacket on in one and a yellow one in t'other.

Thanks, Steve. It's helpful to have the clarification. Let's hope that Laurence can identify the mystery edition the other performance is from and add it to the Database, which is looking very good. There are several duplicates and several 1974-1977 editions in the wrong place but as has been said by Laurence, this will be corrected later and is interesting reading. Shame about the losses of 1977 editions though, which many, if not all of us had thought all existed. I'm hopeful one or more of those, together with others will turn up in the end.

That's very interesting!! If the same camera script is being used, is it possible that 2 takes of this performance were recorded at the same time, 1 used for TOTP and the other one sent to ZDF and never shown on TOTP? Even if Elton is wearing different jackets, perhaps the band members are dressed the same in both versions which may provide a clue.

I don't have a copy of the 25/1/73 performance to hand, so cannot do a direct comparison, although could possibily use the clip on the TOTP2 Website. Just a thought - could be totally wrong!!

Ah! If the same camera script is used in both takes, then it's possible as I said before, that one extra take was shot for Polygram's (or at least non-TOTP) use. This may explain why it doesn't show up on the P as B.

Any known instances of this happening? I've never heard of this before. Unfortunately, this is all guesswork. If only there was some documentation / record available which could shed some light on the matter.

Dear Mark
As you can see I have raised the Question why no clips, including Pickettywitch, have never been shown on TOTP2 from the 26th Feb 1970 show. Even though i'm supposed to be registered on the TOTP2 board i STILL can't get on to its message board to ask this question - most frustrating!
