 Lost Celebrity Squares episode found
« Thread Started on Jul 18, 2012, 5:11pm »

I've just sent a copy of a lost episode of Celebrity Squares to the classic TV organisation Kaleidoscope.

It's a 9th April 1977 edition and features Bob Monkhouse (host), Kenny Everett (voiceover), Ted Moult, Roy Hudd, Katie Boyle, Nerys Hughes, Arthur Mullard, Les Dawson, Frank Carson, William Rushton and Jean Rook.

I was infomed that this episode is not in the archives at ITV and only exists in the Bob Monkhouse Collection as a domestic audio recording of the soundtrack, so I was well pleased to be able to uncover and return this classic episode.

I wonder if any more exist on home formats, considered some celebrities appearing would have had better access to home recording equipment.
Lost Shows lists quite a few that only known to exist as domestic recordings.

I forgot to mention it's a studio edit with VT clock, ATV idents and break bumpers, so all the more rare.

Hi Bryan,
Is that the Easter 1977 episode? If so I've had a VHS copy of that for years, and as it had the vt clock etc, just assumed it was from a dub of a master VT that existed.
It was from a friend who worked at Central in the early 80's.

The very one. On Kaleidoscope's lost TV shows database it was stated as only existing as a domestic audio recording in the Monkhouse archive. So I thought if I sent Kaleidoscope a copy, they'd we well pleased. :)

Do send them it. Whether it's out on the collectors' market or not, Kaleidoscope having a copy is a good idea. They'll make safety copies too.

Indeed, having video as well as audio is always nice. No reason whatsoever in contemplating how they would not be excited by this here! Now the big questions are: What quality is the recovered material? 1st gen, 2nd gen copy? Colour here or monochrome? Wondering as well into the source format recording here? N1500/N1700, U-Matic, open reel video??

I know that I am not the only one wondering about these items here..

Cheers, Lance.

Hi Lance,
Well my copy I would say is very good and I don't recall any pic/sound faults, I assumed it had come off a 2"cvt. It's now on DVD, but I still have the original VHS it came from. It's full colour and sound.
I still find it hard to believe it does not exist somewhere in master form?

It's a DVD transfer from a cassette tape which was itself transferred from the original master tape, which had since been lost. It's in very good quality considering the archive nature of the material.

I also have an off-air recording of The Golden Shot from 1974, which is Charlie Williams' final episode. Can anyone confirm whether this episode is still in existance at ITV archives?

Interesting Bryan......sounds like it's possibly from the VHS I have. I only recall having dubbed it once recently, so if yours is a recent acquisition, we could be talking about the same original VHS.
- I am still suprised that the 2" has been 'lost'. but my VHS sounds like it's the original source for your DVD.

I believe 24/03/74 was his last one, that exists.
