Juke box Jury and the Beatles
« Thread Started on Jul 7, 2012, 10:28am »

I believe the BBC had the video recording of this but with no sound but they were going to try and match it up with an audio recording which someone had seperately, this was some time back, but what happened to it? ::)

If only it was a video recording! From what I recall it was 8mm footage shot off the screen by a fan during the original transmission. No idea how much footage was captured or how fragmented it's likely to be.

Not a Beatles expert, but I always understood it to be 8mm fottage recorded off air by simply pointing the camera at the screen. There has always been talk that there is an off air audio recording as well, which certainly isn't far fetched, but I didn't know the BBC had actually gained access to either recording. Can anyone shed light on this please?

The audio was found in 2001.

Ah, ok, sorry for misinformation. I have heard of both existing 'somewhere' independently, but I had obviously forgotten about one of the two getting returned, very bad memory.

Ah, yes I think that was it, 8mm footage, most likely it could have been just fragments and not the whole show. I tried pointing a cine camera at the tv screen once or twice and I filmed the opening credits of the Invaders got a bit of Freddie Starr doing Max Wall on Who do you Do ? Also a bit of footage of the Ali v Frazier fight. No sound and theres strobing because of the difference in the speed of the camera and tv, and the end result looks blue, my one and only blue movie ! Incidentally these digital cameras are brilliant one can get a very sharp picture from them if they are pointed at the tv,very handy if the clip or prog is blocked, although the sound is not gonna be too great, just like they used to do in the old days, tele-recording.

If the BBC have the same audio that’s circulating among collectors, then it’ll be missing the opening section. The recording I have starts with Paul talking about an Elvis Presley record they’d just heard and runs for 20 minutes. So maybe the cine film is of the opening section only and that’s why they’re unable to sync it up to anything.

Christopher Perry's post on the 'BFI Finds' threads says that there are at least three audios known.

Two separate recordings make up the circulating version, apparently they overlapped by only a few seconds - One being 9:13 minutes, the other 11:35. It could be that the third ‘recording’ is actually just those two joined together, but hopefully it is the whole show (and in much better quality, as the one I have is pretty poor).

I might suggest that, however patchy the audio is, and the visuals are, it still ought to be patched together and shown on TV.

I am not (repeat not!) trying to start a rumour here but there have been stories of a telerecording of the Juke Box Jury being in the possession of a major Beatles collector/bootlegger (who takes his nom de dodgy from the lyrics of Some Other Guy). No idea whether there is any truth to this at all or whether it is just The Tenth Planet 4 of Beatle fans.

There have been some remarkable quality audios of It's The Beatles which of course followed on from the Juke Box Jury on 7 Dec 1963 appear fairly recently but again I'm not holding my breath.

Until/unless a nice video recording surfaces,I'm surprised no-one's tried animating this...

It may be of some interest, but an obscure news feature following the original broadcast stated that "all four Beatles took possession of 16mm telecines of the broadcast." My own feelings are that Apple probably did their own research during the Anthology trawl and more than likely drew a blank . However, I did hear from an authoritative source that George Harrison's appearance on the show HAS survived in the Apple archive, Anyone with any contacts there might be able to confirm this.

It was rumored that Ringo once had a copy but lost it (and most of his archive) in a house fire in 1979 - It is certainly true that he lost some stuff (he was surprised to find some of what he thought was lost had survived when researching Anthology) but what he actually had is unknown.
