Ray,I'm glad you've started this thread, not least because it gives me a chance to ask about all those compilation tapes listed at the BFI.:
Forty years of the BBC.1976. 55 mins. Aberfan Disaster newsflashes etc. 1966. All these rock years.Includes Dylan interview. Christmas promotions. 1979. Christmas on Tyne Tees.1977. etc. Forthcoming drama productions on Yorkshire TV. 1975, Does anyone know if all these will have been checked? One of them-and I'm trying to remember which-has clips of a Diana Dors series which is poorly represented.Hence the bell ringing.
This one: http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/13294 on the BFI database.'1979 a compilation',is meant to have selections from 'Frost on Saturday','Crossroads',etc.especially compiled for the Edinburgh Festival.

That link you provided is very interesting indeed...it may say 1979 but all the programmes date from 1969 so I think 1979 is a typo and means the contents of the compilation might be even more rare!
Only 3 episodes of Crossroads exist from 1969 so the clips included are very likely missing footage.
As the Edinburgh Television Festival is traditionally held mid-year, does this mean there could also be some 1968 material on there?
Can this be added to the list of things to be checked with the BFI? It would be interesting to know how long the compilation is and exactly what is on there. Could there for example be any other Dr Who clips on there apart from the War Games?
I think this one could be very interesting...

Martin, thanks for pointing out about the date. You're right that 79 sounds a bit late for the War Games! The trouble,is,I'd like to be sure that all the compilations aren't already done, before I flag them.

I will speak to Chris Perry either at Stourbridge today or by email after he comes back, and see if he can look into it. It's at the BFI, and I have annoyed the f##k out of them in the past (history of this concerns the 'old' database and the new one - the 'old' one did not actually state what they owned, just listed stuff known about, the new one DOES state what they own), hence why I leave it to Chris. I am known as the enfant terrible, because I have annoyed a few archives/archivists over the last three years....although I do have a great working relationship with some others....

The 1979 date for the BFI Edinburgh Festival compilation may well be accurate. There would be interest in seeing clips from older programmes and the decade or so between the dates would provide an obvious theme. Doctor Who: The War Games(and other Troughton stories, all surviving now) were donated to the BFI in 1977, rather than being destroyed. It would still be interesting to know about the clips from the other programmes of course.

Thanks Ray,
I look forward to hearing what happens.
I think most of the shows that are listed date from 1968/9 so thats why I thought the date on the compilation was wrong.
Maybe the compilation was to show what was on TV 10 years ago but if so it might have been most obvious if they have themed the compilation around a decade (for example the 1960s) as so as not to have to narrowly restrict their choice of clips to one particular 12 month period. Therefore I still think there's a good chance the compilation was to show what was on TV over the last year and therefore dates from 1969.
Fingers crossed there will be a few missing clips in this lot.

All of the clips in the first post are catalogued in the Kaleidoscope BBC Drama guide.
The Edinburgh International television festival started in 1976, so if it is really from the festival it must be a "what was on ten years ago" type of compilation.
