Sad news, if not that much of a surprise. A very funny man. Modest about his success, too.

A true comedy legend. Not many of his generation left now.

In general, just out of curiosity, what are the archives like for 'Sykes' and his other BBC material?
Does a lot of Sykes still survive?

More missing than survive of the original b/w Sykes and A... series. 59 episodes were made over 9 series, of which 24 survive and 35 are lost. All the 70s revival episodes survive. Other eary Sykes shows are also missing. Three episodes of the 'Sykes and a Big Big Show' series of six episodes from 1971 are also lost and one of the 3 suviving is a b/w film print.

It's nice to know-largely thanks to his own pushing?-that the 'Sykes' DVD set had,unusually,deleted/extended scenes,I believe?

Sad to hear about this - the news coming through while I was away this past week. A well liked and modest comedian who had seemingly been around forever. At least there's plenty of his material still existing to enjoy. I'd recommend his autography too, for a good read on an era of the entertainment industry which has now gone. He had a long life though so R.I.P. Eric.

His autobiography's called 'If I Don't Write it,Nobody Else Will',which seemed to sum up the status of old-time television in the UK.

And I managed to pick up the last copy of it for £2.99 in a cheapo book shop this week, before the reprint goes on sale for a tenner .. maybe.
