 The Big Show (1968).
« Thread Started on Jun 13, 2012, 4:01pm »

A U.S. site is offering soundtracks to three missing (or have the now been found?) episodes of The Big Show:

21/4/68 (Dusty Springfield,etc).
5/5/68 (Michael Bentine etc.
21/7/68 (Ester and Abi Ofarim etc.)

They also list Variety Special a/k/a 'The Heart of Show Business',an all-star special in support of Aberfan.Anyone know the status of this one?

Which one, can you post the link????

The Big Show went under different titles on occasion, I believe, but some are missing.
Is it just the soundtrack or the film/video too?

Ah... "Showtime" - made in colour in London but it seems only b+w kinescopes exist of some episodes. I know that the 1968-06-25, 1968-07-23 and 1968-08-13 editions exist as kinescopes... not sure about the rest. It was some Summer replacement show I've been told and only ran for the one season.

Gad,is it complicated, but it looks as though all the 'missing' Spotlights-which was another title it went under in the UK- (and one or two that were unknown) have been found in the last few days by gwilson,on here.

In 2007 this site hosted a thread on the survival of some of these shows with a claim to have found a few,I believe,on 16mm at the library of Congress.
They concluded that the BFI either didn't have them,or didn't know that they had!

The link for the Aberfan show doesn't seem to be working. If you go to the site and search for 'Variety',it's the first thing listed.

The Heart of Show Buisness is now thought to only survive as a domestic betamax after (IIIRC) a technician that had worked on it requested a copy in the late 1970s. Recorded on 625 line PAL, Lew Grade had intended it be kept for posterity because of the nature of its premise, but of course Grade lost control of ATV and so began a treacherous journey of its archive..
