04/04/59 is in the BFI on Digibeta. Lost shows says that it's missing.

Ken,I think I've mentioned all the CCs bar the Winter Sports, which is a wonderful find.
At this rate,it's inevitable that we tread on each others' heels (footsteps?) I'm doing it a lot myself. It sort of puts me off suggesting things, but I think it's understood that it's all due to the enourmous number of (we hope) finds turning up!

I go now to delete my claim to have found Reg Varney shows which another has a claim to.

Drat it!

These talk shows are listed, among others. If they are 'Look Who's Talking',then, with the others listed at the BFI,they represent many of the missing ones:

26/5/73.Ken Dodd.
5/11/73.Ted Ray.
17/12/73.Ian Wallace

29/4/74.Leslie Crother.
18/8/74.Alicia Markova.
25/8/74.Jimmy Jewel.

10/2/75.Hannah Gordon.
10/3/1975.Des O'Connor.(or Jack Douglas,opinions differ).
24/3/75.Barbara Windsor.
9/8/73.Reginald Bosenquet.

3/3/78.Dana
10/3/78. Billy Dainty.
24/3/78.Dukes and Lee.
31/3/78. Ken Dodd.
28/7/76. Paul Daniels.
25/8/78. Don Estelle and Windsor Davies.
1/9/78. Roy Ward Dickson.
1/4/80. Roy Walker.
8/4/80. Roy Hudd.
15/4/80. Billy Dainty.

There also seem to be other episodes which are undated at IMDB,so difficult to match with the ones listed at Lostshows.

Jack Hylton's Monday Show

This is not missing but the 10/2/58 is held in the BFI archive it may be worth checking to see if it is held on 35mm film.

They seem to pretty much complete the run of 'Search For a Star'.Have they already been found,or should I list them?

Apologies for that. This is turning into a bit of an embarrassment for the BFI isn't it? It seems that we've all been hunting for material that they've had all along.

Search For A Star?!? The '60s Rediffusion talent show / beauty contest or something else? I watched it at the time but didn't know any survived! List them if they're there, J - I'd be very interested to see that one again! :D

Small Time

It depends on which show you mean. Small Time was an umbrella title for many things (as Watch With Mother was). For instance, film series Pingwings and Ivor The Engine, which went out under the Small Time banner, exist (although most other series made on VT which were part of it are missing).

The BFI list in their A For Andromeda holdings book one edition of Small Time show The Musical Box (featuring Wally Whyton) from the early '60s as existing. Hopefully the listing is accurate.

Television For Children was a promotional one-off which showed clips from various Rediffusion children's shows (some missing ones) but wasn't connected to Small Time.

It could well be the clip show in the description it quotes Small Time 28:33 and then Brock And Bruin - Policeman Bruin (complete programme 36:58

Hi ray,
Not sure if that Chelsea at Nine is Granada. Am I right in thinking the Billie Holiday VT is from that show? Anyone confirm that?

Yes, that's right, David. 1959, if I recall right.

The contents of Jack Hylton's home cupboards were donated by his family to the BFI a long time ago including some very early VTs, they have not seen the light of day since. IIRC the reasons given at the time was the shows were considered a bit shoddy and dull by modern standards and nobody would be interested.

Meanwhile the hunt goes on at the BFI for that bit of 1920s film of Charlie Chaplin tripping over his bootlace.

"'The Whole Truth...'. 50 mins. c.(not cited) end logo BBC 9/2.64."
