 Kaleidoscope showing LOC plays in September

Kaleidoscope is pleased to announce the schedule for our September event. Comedy writer Colin Edmonds will be joining us to talk about his career and tell us how you make people laugh. In addition we'll be showing a number of programmes and plays returned from Washington's Library of Congress. In fact, we've got so much to show that we're starting on Friday evening.

FRIDAY NIGHT

* 8:00 pm 1984. The 1965 version of Nigel Kneale's adaptation of George Orwell's classic novel opens our weekend of plays found at, and returned by, the Library of Congress in Washington and shown here with the considerable help of the BFI. David Buck stars as Winston Smith with Jane Merrow as Julia, and Joseph O'Conor as O'Brien.

* 10:00 pm 13 Against Fate. Jonathan Burn and Michele Dotrice star in "The Consul" by Georges Simenon. A new Turkish Consul discovers another side to life in a small Soviet port town and finds fascination in the view his bedroom gives of the house across the street.

* 11:00 pm Jean Cocteau's The Typewriter concludes the evening. Starring Patrick Wymark, Margaret Johnston, and Jeremy Brett as a pair of identical twins. But who writes the poisonous letters under the name "The Typewriter"?

* 12:30 am Closedown


MAIN ROOM

* 12:00 pm We open with an HTV West start up from the early 1980s.

* 12:05 pm The Troubleshooters - "Birdstrike". Geoffrey Keen, Ray Barrett, Philip Latham and Robert Hardy star in an episode of this popular 1960s drama which was returned to the BBC last year.

* 1:00 pm Bob Monkhouse comedy ads - a compilation of advertisements found in the Monkhouse collection and featuring well-known comedy artistes.

* 1:15 pm Paint Along With Nancy - the late Nancy Kominsky's subject this week is "Low Tide". Get your palette knives ready...

* 1:45 pm Break

* 2:00 pm Guest Interview: Colin Edmonds. Kaleidoscope is delighted to welcome the comedy writer to our September event where he will be talking about his career and about working with Bob Monkhouse and Paul O'Grady. The interview will be illustrated by clips from programmes Colin has worked on such as Dave Allen at Large, Karen Kay, Bob's Full House and Opportunity Knocks.

* 3:30 pm Afternoon Tea and the launch of our two new digital books - The Comedy Guide 1936-2011 and The BBC Television Drama Research Guide 1936-2011.

* 4:00 pm The National Lottery Live of 30 November 1996 was unusual - the machine broke down! Written by today's guest, Colin Edmonds.

* 4:30 pm Presentation to Penny Heaton, a long-standing friend to Kaleidoscope, who retires from ITV in August 2011. There will also be news of this year's Raiders campaign and an interview with Dick Fiddy of the BFI about the Library of Congress returns.

* 5:00 pm I've Got A Secret, untransmitted 1987 pilot. Written by Colin Edmonds and others this new pilot was made between seasons and features Barry Cryer, Kenneth Williams, Steve Nallon and Jan Leeming among others.

* 5:30 pm Frankie's Encore is another untransmitted programme, containing material shot during the making of his 1992 series Frankie's On…

* 6:00 pm The Late Show is a satirical BBC programme from 1966. This edition features John Bird, Eleanor Bron, Barry Humphreys, John Wells and others, and includes a genuine news flash about a famous escape.

* 6:45 pm Closedown


OTHER ROOM

* 12:00 pm Much Ado About Nothing. Our second batch of Library of Congress finds starts with a 1967 recording of William Shakespeare's play, based on Franco Zeffirelli's stage production. Starring Derek Jacobi, Ronald Pickup, and Robert Stephens. Also features early television performances by Michael Gambon and Caroline John.

* 2:00 pm Charley's Aunt. The famous Brandon Thomas farce needs no introduction. This version features Richard Briers, Frank Pettingell, Pauline Jameson and Colin Gordon.

* 3:00 pm Dr Knock was a 1966 Theatre 625 production based on Jules Romains' play. Leonard Rossiter stars in the title role, with John Le Mesurier, Mavis Villiers, Renée Houston and others.

* 4:30 pm Kika Markham and Derek Godfrey star in Philip Mackie's adaptation of Middleton and Rowley's The Changeling, regarded as one of the best plays of the English renaissance. The excellent cast also includes Patrick Troughton, Nerys Hughes, Esmond Knight, James Kerry and Eric Lander.

* 6:00 pm Patterns Of Love was an ambitious series of programmes for schools in 1962. Spread throughtout the series was an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The series is long gone, but a compilation of the play segments survived at LoC. Starring Peter Ellis, Rick Jones, David Weston, Jane Asher and Jessie Evans.

* 7:00 pm Closedown

All material at Kaleidoscope events is screened with the permission of the copyright holders. Programmes and timings may be subject to change before the day. Guests appear subject to professional and personal commitments.

In 2011, Kaleidoscope is supporting the Royal National Lifeboat Institution once again.
