The Mersey Pirate (Granada) 1979 - missing?
« Thread Started on Jun 18, 2010, 3:54pm »

I am so pleased to finally be able to view two YouTube clips of one of my most favourite 70s kids shows (I was only 8 at the time), "The Mersey Pirate". It was one of those that suffered during the summer strikes at ITV and was pulled after six weeks of transmission or so.

I remember it being quite ahead of its time, due to the mix of the location and the fact of it being live too.

Anyone else remember it?
It was only shown in certain ITV regions, so it won't be familiar to everyone. :)

I was 14 at the time and living in Liverpool-being a bit older, I preferred Tiswas and found the Mersey Pirate an annoying interruption to my favourite Saturday Morning TV programme-2 clips survive-hey no great loss-I remember it being a bit naff, like most 'filler' shows that covered that School 'Hols' period in the era...

TVS, Saturday Banana. And there was a big Banana outside the Maidstone TV Studios if I recall. Not a real one, a model one.

For those of us who (biased comment coming up) were narrowly inside the London reception area and had Thames during the week and LWT on weekends, which meant no coverage of Southampton games on the Big Match pretty much (thanks for letting me getting that out of my system after all these years....)

he continues....

I seem to recall 'Our Show', which was a Saturday morning 'filler show' by LWT.

Bringing - for I hope the only time a complete personal bias to a Post, I just want to say that as a pretentious nurdy primary school kid, I found the show - "presented" by children, who seemed to be stage school children sometimes affecting Cockney accents and being a mixture of unprofessional, unentertaining or just damn stupid to be one of the worst experience of my television watching life.

Here's a clip from the show of Mickey Dolenz and Davy Jones:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsLC5D4Iy9Y

A number of the presenters went on to Grange Hill.

You can read about the programme here:- http://www.paulmorris.co.uk/satkids/ourshow.htm

Apologies to anyone connected with the programme. Look, I'm sure you are all talented people. I just hated it, ok?

That concludes the end of my only biased Post. Thank you if it's not deleted!

I have been in contact with the ITV regarding the two shows that are supposed to survive in their archives - but they now say they no longer have them.
Junked or missing do we think?

This is a tad disheartening to hear there Chris.Hoping they might possibly just be misplaced by ITV here?Even if was not the best, would still be a great loss there.

Just saw this "LWT Interval into The Mersey Pirate (1979)"as well added on YT.

Cheers,Lance.

This isn't real. cwilliams1976 is obsessed with mocking up unconvincing faux continuity from the 1970s. His unique selling point (other than his woeful vocal style) is to insert several minutes of testcard music into his crap videos where there would never have been any unless the transmission suite was being evacuated at the time, due to being on fire.

Indeed.
Mr Bernard Wrigley - (the chef and) the YT upper of the two MP clips seems to be the only one to (publicly owning up to archiving & therefore) having access to these shows. On his own blog he admits to recording the shows and watching off-air on his return home from the show.

I've spent hours and hours "trawling" the net for more info and can find none.

The mystery on this grows.
Those familiar with this case will know that allegedly, two shows survive. There's some misleading info on ITNsource about it so I attempted to see if I could get some sort of clarification.

I mailed ITV regarding a viewing copy of at least one of these and they kindly replied saying that two copies were listed...not dated. Quote:
"We only have eps 1&2, not sure of TX dates though , that's all the info we have I'm afraid. We can run off copies for both of them if you want but can't guarantee they're the ones you want".

So I hastily arranged for viewing copies of both shows. I then got an email after several days, saying, "Sorry, looks like we don’t have these here after all!"

It was a week or so after this that I emailed the company regarding another matter and mentioned The Mersey Pirate again. The reply was, "If I remember rightly we didn’t have anything for Mersey Pirate, or it was only on film at GTV."

So will I/we ever get to see it again, or not, is the question! If so, where is it?!
I've submitted this info to Ray Langstone beforehand as I know this is a "missing" show of interest to him.
:)

ITN Source suggests - with very wrong dates - they have three full episodes and four inserts, one of the inserts may be a duplicate. According to ITN Source they have episodes 4, 7 and 6 - totally different from the real picture that Chris found out about!

So a major investigation must take place, me thinks.
I'm kicking myself as I audio recorded a good five or six full shows, as an innocent 8-yo!
One full show I had was featuring The Undertones recording Teenage Kicks.
:(
Whistle Test used the film as an insert once.

This means the clip was at least around in 1984, as Andy Kershaw was not presenting Whistle Test until then. My bet is that ITN Source have just mislaid what they have, or it's some other inexpicable internal reason, admin problem or 'bad (obsolescent) format' (there is a recent tale of this involving another broadcaster.... I'd love to tell you who, but I would have to kill you....and that's almost natural history, u nit!).
