A missing episode of At Last The 1948 Show and a lost edition of The Frankie Howerd Show have been returned to the BFI.
The story is on my site www.wipednews.com if anyone wants to find out more.

Half the sketches of this 1948 show were already known from compilations, but the complete episode was lost until now!

How long ago was it that the compilation was returned?

There were five compilations returned (all have been released on DVD) and six other original editions, which have been recovered / restored from various sources plus some other incomplete editions re-composited from material in the compilations plus audio soundtracks. So with this new (near)complete episode recovery, I make it almost seven original episodes existing in total now. Can anyone say if this is correct?
A very good recovery rate for a Rediffusion programme not to mention one as funny and as significant as this. Now all we need is a proper DVD release of all the original episodes with the incomplete editions and audios as extras!
Well done to all who tracked down this gem.

So am I right in saying that now 7 out of 13 episodes of this exist? That really is a pretty good survival rate considering some programs are entirely unrepresented.
Well done to all involved.
I expect we shall see this on DVD one day!

Even better, 8 out of 13. Of those 8 2 have been reconstructed by the BFI. And more sketches survive, I guess up to 90% remains. Almost everything exists as off air audio.
Matthew S. once made a list that is quoted here: http://orangecow.org/pythonet/1948show/ and quite a few things have turned up since then.
The dvd release was bloody worthless, as has been noted before. It pretended to offer remaining episodes that were, in reality, only the compilations. The rest of the material was totally ignored.

Do you have details of exactly which eight they are? I used to have a list of them (when they were only about six) which has since gone missing!

Oh when I said 2, I had already included the latest find in the count. The first one was years ago, when the BFI reconstructed 2.2. Only "taking my clothes off" was missing from the compilations, and that sketch had turned up in Australia, apparently.
Matthew Sharp was still working on a new list, but I haven't heard from him in a long time.

I'm interested in whether the collector knew the episodes were missing ?

That's mainly because I haven't done any work on it in a long time! (2005 was the last time I updated my master list.) Alas that filthy thing called a "career" has gotten in the way of pleasurable afternoons of spoddy listmanship, dammit.
Frankly I've lost track of 1948 Show finds a bit ; I only headed over here today after years away because I heard a rumour about a new find. Trouble is that I'm on the wrong side of the world to see any of this newly found stuff. I'm just waiting for the day when the BFI unleashes a super-DVD release of everything that's turned up and puts us all out of our misery. But I'm happy for that to be delayed for a while longer if new bits and pieces keep turning up.
By my (possibly inaccurate) count, the surviving episodes are 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 2/2, 2/3, 2/5, 2/7 (my list says 2/7 "exists, apparently"!); with 2/1 and now 2/6 reconstructed with some audio only sections. And there's at least some surviving footage from the other 4 episodes, too. Happy to take corrections, though.
Cheers chums!

Btw., on Comedy Connections they once showed a bit of vox pops from the 1948 show. Cleese is asking a man in the street (Tim) what he thinks of the 1948 show. Does anyone know from what episode that was taken? (Normally Comedy Connections doesn't show anything useful but this time, they did. It was the episode about the Goodies I think.)
Anyway 4 of the original episodes are circulating amongst collectors, sometimes even in very fine quality.

Not quite half the year gone and a significant set of programme recoveries already. As for the '1948 Show', it would seem there is still a chance (albeit remote) of a full set of this landmark series being possible. I believe it was the last major comedy series made by the Rediffusion Company.
